Diamond Carat Size Chart: What Each Carat Really Looks Like

A diamond carat size chart helps you turn an abstract number, such as 0.50 ct or 1.00 ct, into something you can picture on a finger. I'm Antonio, and I'm going to keep this practical: what a carat actually is, how big the main sizes are in millimetres, and why two diamonds of the same carat weight can look different.

What is a carat?

A carat is a unit of weight, not size. One carat equals 0.2 grams, and it is divided into 100 points, so a 0.50 ct diamond weighs 50 points. This is why a diamond's weight is stated to two decimals on a certificate. For the other factors that define quality, see our guide to the 4 Cs of diamonds.

Round diamond carat size chart

The table below shows approximate diameters for well-proportioned round brilliant diamonds. Real stones vary by a few tenths of a millimetre depending on the cut, so treat these as guides, not guarantees.

Carat weight Approx. diameter (mm)
0.25 ct about 4.1
0.30 ct about 4.3
0.50 ct about 5.1
0.70 ct about 5.6
1.00 ct about 6.4 to 6.5
1.50 ct about 7.4
2.00 ct about 8.1 to 8.2
3.00 ct about 9.3 to 9.4

Notice something interesting: going from 1.00 ct to 2.00 ct doubles the weight, but the diameter only grows by roughly 1.7 mm. That is because weight increases with volume, while your eye reads the top surface.

Shape changes what you see

Carat weight does not tell you how large the diamond looks from above. Shape matters a lot:

  • Round: compact and deep, so it hides more weight below the surface.
  • Oval, pear and marquise: elongated outlines that usually look larger face-up than a round of the same weight.
  • Emerald and Asscher: step cuts that can look larger across the top, but they are shown by length and width rather than a single diameter.
  • Princess and cushion: square-ish shapes that are generally deeper, so they tend to look slightly smaller than a round stone of equal weight.

For fancy shapes, ask for the length by width measurements, which appear on the certificate (GIA, IGI or HRD). I go deeper into this in how to make a diamond look bigger.

Cut quality can beat carat

Two stones of 1.00 ct can have different diameters if one is cut deep and the other is more spread. A deeper stone keeps weight in the bottom, where nobody sees it. When you compare diamonds, compare the millimetre measurements as well as the weight.

Which carat size is right for you?

  • Around 0.30 to 0.50 ct: delicate and elegant, good for minimalist styles and slim hands.
  • Around 0.70 to 1.00 ct: a very popular range, with a visible but wearable presence.
  • 1.50 ct and above: a statement size, where setting and band width matter even more.

Remember that the finger matters too: the same stone looks different on a slim finger than on a wider one. If you aren't sure about your ring size yet, our ring size guide can help.

Lab-grown and larger sizes

Lab-grown diamonds generally cost less than natural ones with the same specifications, so some buyers use the difference to go up in carat size. The size chart is the same, because a carat is a carat. What differs is the price and long-term resale value. Read lab-grown vs natural diamonds before you decide.

My advice: do not chase a number. Decide the millimetre size you like, then choose the best cut you can afford. Sometimes a 0.90 ct stone with a great spread looks as big as a heavier but deeper stone, and a diamond just under a round number can offer better value than one sitting right on 1.00 ct.

FAQ

How many mm is a 1 carat diamond?

A well-cut round 1 carat diamond is roughly 6.4 to 6.5 mm across. Fancy shapes have different length and width measurements.

How big is a 0.5 carat diamond?

A round 0.50 ct diamond is typically around 5.1 mm in diameter.

Does a 2 carat diamond look twice as big as 1 carat?

No. It weighs twice as much, but the diameter increases by roughly 1.7 mm, so it looks bigger, not double.

Which looks bigger at the same carat, round or oval?

An oval usually looks larger from above because the weight is spread over a longer surface.

Are lab-grown diamonds the same size per carat?

Yes. Carat measures weight, and a lab-grown diamond of a given cut has the same proportions and size as a natural one of the same weight.
