Lab-Grown vs Natural Diamond: Differences, Price and Which to Choose

Lab-Grown vs Natural Diamond: Differences, Price and Which to Choose

It's the question I get asked most before someone buys an engagement ring: lab-grown diamond or natural diamond? There is a lot of confusion, and most of the answers you will read online are trying to sell you one of the two. Here I explain the real differences between a natural diamond and a lab-grown diamond (also called synthetic or cultured diamond), without drama, so you can decide with confidence.

At Antonio Amberes Jewelry we work with both, so I have no interest in pushing you towards either one: what follows is what I would apply myself to choose.

What is a lab-grown diamond? Both are real diamonds

A lab-grown diamond is not an imitation. It is crystallised carbon, just like a natural one, with the same structure, the same hardness (10 on the Mohs scale) and the same brilliance. We are not talking about cubic zirconia or moissanite, which are different materials.

The difference is the origin: a natural diamond formed underground over billions of years, while a lab-grown diamond is grown in machines in a matter of weeks, using processes such as HPHT or CVD.

Differences between natural and lab-grown diamonds

  • Price. At the same size and quality, a lab-grown diamond is considerably cheaper. With the same budget you can aim for more carats or better colour and clarity.
  • Long-term value. A natural diamond is a limited resource and tends to hold its value better. Lab-grown diamonds can be produced in quantity, so you should not buy one thinking about resale.
  • How to tell them apart. You cannot by eye. Specialised laboratory equipment is needed, which is why the certificate matters so much.
  • Meaning. For many people, natural origin has its own emotional value. For others, design and size matter most. Both views are valid.

The 4Cs: how a diamond is valued

Both are assessed with the same criteria, the 4Cs of diamonds: cut, colour, clarity and carat. A well-cut lab-grown diamond can be just as brilliant as a natural one. What changes is the price and the origin, not the way they are graded.

Diamond certificate: GIA, IGI and HRD

Whichever you buy, ask for a diamond certificate from a recognised laboratory (such as GIA, IGI or HRD). It states whether the stone is natural or lab-grown, its characteristics and an identification number. If a seller cannot show you one, be wary.

Which diamond should you choose for your engagement ring?

If you want... Best choice
More size or more quality for your budget Lab-grown diamond
A piece to keep that holds its value Natural diamond
Natural origin to carry a special meaning Natural diamond
A striking design without a huge price Lab-grown diamond

My advice: there is no absolutely better option. Choose according to what this jewel will mean to you. And whichever you pick, look first at the cut and make sure it comes with a certificate: they are what you notice most and what protects you most.

FAQ about lab-grown diamonds

Is a lab-grown diamond fake?

No. It is a real diamond, with the same composition and structure as a natural one. Only its origin is different.

Can you see the difference with the naked eye?

No. Not even a jeweller can tell them apart without specialised equipment.

Does a lab-grown diamond stay brilliant over time?

Yes. It has the same hardness as a natural diamond, so it withstands everyday wear equally well.

Which one has more resale value?

In general, a natural diamond holds its value better. A lab-grown diamond is bought for its beauty and price, not as an investment.

Are lab-grown diamonds cheaper?

Yes. At the same size and quality they cost considerably less than a natural one, and the gap is usually bigger the larger the diamond.
